Life can feel uncertain and overwhelming, especially when we face mental health struggles. In Ecclesiastes, life is described as “Hevel,” a Hebrew word meaning smoke or vapor. Hevel captures the idea of life being fleeting and hard to grasp. Like smoke, it shifts and slips through our fingers, beautiful yet unpredictable. In times of mental fog, seeing clearly can feel impossible.
This image of Hevel offers insight into our mental health journey. Often, we feel a need to “fix” everything and gain control. But the author of Ecclesiastes reminds us that some aspects of life—including mental health—aren’t meant to be fully controlled or understood. Healing, then, isn’t always about finding answers; it can mean learning to live with mystery, letting go of control, and trusting that God is with us in the fog.
Scripture encourages us to seek wisdom and reverence for God, anchoring ourselves in His presence. Even when our minds are clouded, God’s love remains steady, offering peace beyond our understanding. We may not fully grasp our struggles, but we can lean into the One who does.
In times of distress, may we find hope knowing that God walks through the fog with us. Healing isn’t always about escaping the smoke; sometimes, it’s about finding peace within it. Today, let us surrender our uncertainties, trusting that God holds our lives, even when they feel as fleeting as smoke.
